When Aishwarya Rai opened up about how she and Abhishek Bachchan handle challenges in their relationship: ‘If you can shut the chapter today…’

Speculation around the state of cinema icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and actor Abhishek Bachchan’s marriage has been growing, especially after none of the Bachchan family, including Abhishek, publicly wished Aishwarya on her 51st birthday on November 1. While fans and well-wishers worldwide showered Aishwarya with love and affection on her special day, even her father-in-law, legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan, known for his lengthy blog posts on various occasions, noticeably refrained from posting a birthday message.

Fans were quick to notice this omission, as Aishwarya and Abhishek have never shied away from publicly expressing their affection for one another. For Abhishek’s 48th birthday on February 5 this year, Aishwarya posted two photos on Instagram: one of them with their daughter Aaradhya and another of Abhishek as a child, along with a warm birthday message. "🎶✨Here’s wishing you Happy Birthday 🎊🌈with much happiness, love, calm, peace and good health God Bless🧿🌈💝Shine on!🌟," she wrote. Last year, she shared a photo of him that seemed to be taken by her during one of their dates, captioning it, "💝Birthday love… today and forever, Baby🥰."

In 2022, Abhishek wished Aishwarya a happy birthday with an old photo and the message, "Happy Birthday, wifey! Love, light, peace and eternal success. ❤️." However, last year, he kept it simple, posting a black-and-white photo of the beauty queen with only, "Happy Birthday! ❤️🧿," as a message. The couple also marked their wedding anniversary this year, on April 20, by sharing selfies together and hence, this year’s lack of a birthday message for Aishwarya struck many as unusual.

Amid these rumours, an old interview with the Ponniyin Selvan actor has resurfaced, where she reflects on her equation with Abhishek and how they handle challenges in their relationship. "There’s a lot of adjustment, a lot of give and take. There will be agreements and disagreements. But it's important to keep the communication going. That’s something I've always believed in," she said during a chat with Filmfare once.

"Abhishek has been wonderful to respect that. Communication is extremely important in a relationship. Doesn’t it all start with friendship? What’s friendship all about? I’m not one of those who say, 'Okay shut it for today and don’t take it to tomorrow.' If it needs to go to tomorrow, then it’ll go to tomorrow. And if you can shut the chapter today, great! But neither fit into a rule book. There’s no finality in looking at each day. You have to be open-minded about how you share your time together. It also means respecting and being sensitive to your partner," she added.

One of the most celebrated celebrity couples in the country, Aishwarya and Abhishek tied the knot in 2007 and welcomed their daughter on November, 16, 2011. Aaradhya will turn 13 next Saturday. While Aishwarya was last seen in director Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan movies, her performance in which earned the superstar multiple awards, Abhishek is now gearing up for the release of I Want To Talk, helmed by Piku director Shoojit Sircar.
